Honda Elsinore CR125M 1976

Maya’s first motorcycle

This was my very first motorcycle. I got it when I was 16 years old. What made this motorcycle special to me was that it represented the start of a life-long passion for motorcycle riding, and doing exactly what I was told I could not do.

My mother would never allow me to ride dirt bikes or motorcycles growing up. She didn’t put her foot down very often, but she dug her heels in on this one. I begged her for years to let me ride with no progress. Then, when I was 16 years old, I met Michael. The truth be told, I learned Michael had motorcycles and wanted to be his friend. Michael taught me how to ride, and he also helped me pick out my first bike – a Honda 125 Elsinore. I kept it at his house so my mother wouldn’t have to be reminded about it.

This was the motorcycle I learned how to ride. I learned the basics like stopping, starting, using the clutch and balance. The motorcycle was temperamental and difficult to ride. The bike was loud and would easily “bog” down, making it difficult to learn much more than beginner skills. I would drop it frequently while climbing hills, but back then I tended to bounce and not feel it so much!
